Hiking in the Pacific Coast of Veraguas

The Pacific coast of Veraguas has two national parks and protected areas with diverse landscapes where you may have close encounters with monkeys, macaws, and an amazing variety of tropical birds.

Coiba National Park

Coiba National Park, one of the most important in the country, is a national treasure recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO thanks to its astonishing diversity in marine and terrestrial areas.

More than 80% of the park is covered by original vegetation. Along its paths you may come across more than 36 mammal species, 147 bird species or 39 reptile and amphibian species. To soak up all its beauty, follow the Los Pozos Termales trail until you reach the thermal water pools. On the Cerro Gambute trail, search for buzzards and red-rumped woodpeckers. Along Los Monos trail, walk through the dense forest, and you’ll see packs of monkeys that will come out to greet you.

Cerro Hoya National Park

Cerro Hoya National Park combines coastal landscapes with forests and mountains. Here you can see more than 30 species of endemic plants, more than 225 species of birds and mammals such as agoutis, deers, monkeys and ocelots.

Go on an exhilarating two-day hike to the summit of Cerro Hoya, 1559 MASL (5114 feet), or be awestruck by the magnificent Rio Playita Waterfall.

Cerro Hoya is the source of a great variety of rivers. On the trails you’ll come across the rivers Pavo, Playita, Varadero, Guanico and Tonosi, among others.

To complete your trekking trip along the Pacific coast of Veraguas, make sure to hike the Almácigos trail on Isla Cebaco and walk through the mangroves and Quebro Waterfalls.
