Boquete: Capital of Climbing and Rappelling

Boquete, in the province of Chiriqui, harbors rock formations in the middle of lush vegetation and views of the most extraordinary mountains in the country. It’s the perfect destination to ascend the mountains by climbing and descend by rappelling.

It’s true that climbing is an extreme sport. Fortunately, the type of formations, the professional guides, and the safety gear that you find in Boquete, have literally put rock climbing in the hands of amateurs of all levels.

Its 20 climbing routes make Boquete the dream come true for any climber. It’s about 25 minutes from the town with an easy road access. You’ll find striking vertical volcanic rock walls and horizontal basalt columns with excellent holds.

Choose Your Ascent

Boquete has 4 incredible spots to practice climbing: Gunko, Mana Wall, Legacy, and Paradiso. The most famous is Gunko, Panamá’s first climbing site. It’s a natural wall made up of volcanic rocks in the area of Bajo Mono. Its curves, overhangs, and positive holds make the perfect support for the feet.

There, you’ll discover the adrenaline of climbing, if you haven’t felt it before. In order to get there, just tell the cab to take you to "Los Ladrillos" which literally means “The Bricks.” When you see the wall, you’ll understand why it’s called that way and why it’s so popular.

Gunko has 15 routes (5.6 – 5.11a), and it’s perfect for beginner and intermediate climbers. However, the adventure doesn’t end there. Once you descend, enhance your experience by crossing the street and taking a well-deserved bath in the Caldera River.

Furthermore, nearby, 100 meters away, lies Mana Wall. It’s made up of 7 challenging routes (5.10a – 5.13d) for experienced climbers. Before ascending, you’ll agree with your guide on the route that best suits your level. They’ll keep you safe and provide you with any safety equipment that you may need for the experience.

For the bravest and, above all, most advanced climbers there’s Legacy: 6 routes(5.10a – 5.13a) full of adrenaline and a long and amazing ascent for elite climbers. To reach the summit you’ll need outstanding footwork and a really good technique.

If your thirst for adrenaline is even greater, and you know you have the skills, Paradiso has only one route (5.13a) that will surely quench your thirst.

Remember that this activity is only carried out with specialized tour operators who will provide you with all the necessary equipment and instructions to make your climbing and descent in the most fun and safe way.

You can climb almost any time of the year. It’s recommended to schedule your experiences in the morning when it slightly rains. Otherwise, the best time to go is from December to April when it’s not the rainy season.
