Cacao, the Black Gold of Bocas del Toro  

Bocas del Toro is home to the “black gold,” the precious cacao that grows thanks to more than 1,000 producers. Most of the farmers are from the indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé community, and they will offer you community-based tourism experiences where you will learn about the organic cacao sowing, their community, traditions and relationship with the land.

The Cacao Culture

Cacao is an ancestral plant that has been cultivated in the Americas since ancient times. In Panamá, more than 12,355 acres (5,000 hectares) are dedicated to its cultivation.

Specialized farms have improved processes, have achieved international certifications for organic products and have also created tourist experiences to make it known. 

When visiting the farms within the regions or administered by a native village, you will learn about the significance of this fruit for their ancestors, the rituals that evoke its name and the artisanal grinding processes. Remember that by participating in these activities, you will not only take away an everlasting memory, but you will also be contributing to the efforts of more than 1,500 families dedicated to cacao cultivation. Participate in the activities that indigenous leaders will offer you and, at the end, prepare your own candy. 

During this communal experience, you will walk among the crops while the guide explains the benefits of this product of the gods. You will witness the harvesting, drying and grinding process of the cacao. Then, you will be part of the moment when the fruit is turned into a delicious chocolate bar.
